Nature Niños Amplifies Youth Voices to Policymakers at the Outdoor Economics Conference

We are thrilled to share that Nature Niños was recently highlighted by the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators (NCEL) in their Community Spotlights section! This feature shines a light on our impactful work in connecting youth with policymakers and outdoor leaders to discuss vital issues around outdoor equity. At the recent New Mexico Outdoor Economics Conference, we had the incredible opportunity to bring youth leaders to the forefront of these discussions.

Youth Leadership for Outdoor Equity

As part of our commitment to empowering the next generation, Nature Niños facilitated a youth panel at the Outdoor Economics Conference, providing young leaders with a platform to voice their perspectives on outdoor access, equity, and environmental justice. This panel brought together youth, policymakers, nonprofit leaders, and community members to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities facing New Mexico's outdoor spaces. Our youth leaders shared personal stories and insights, advocating for greater access to outdoor spaces for all communities, particularly those historically marginalized.

Why Youth Engagement Matters

Nature Niños believes that young people are powerful advocates for change. Their voices bring fresh perspectives and an urgency that can inspire action. The Outdoor Economics Conference was a perfect venue for these young leaders to share their ideas and connect directly with decision-makers who influence outdoor policy in New Mexico. By elevating their voices, we aim to build a future where outdoor spaces are accessible, equitable, and protected for generations to come.

Key Takeaways from the Conference

The youth panel at the conference highlighted several key issues:

  • Equity in Outdoor Access: Youth panelists discussed the need for equitable access to outdoor spaces, especially for underserved communities. They emphasized the importance of affordable programming, transportation, and culturally relevant outdoor experiences.
  • Youth Perspectives on Policy: Our youth leaders provided feedback on current policies and shared their visions for more inclusive outdoor opportunities. Their unique insights help shape more effective policies that reflect the needs of younger generations.
  • Community and Environmental Stewardship: Panelists also explored the role of young people in environmental stewardship, emphasizing the importance of hands-on, experiential learning to cultivate a deeper connection with nature.

Looking Ahead

This spotlight by NCEL reaffirms the importance of youth involvement in policy discussions and outdoor advocacy. At Nature Niños, we are excited to continue providing these platforms for young voices, helping to shape a more inclusive and sustainable outdoor future. As we look ahead, we are committed to fostering partnerships, hosting more youth-centered events, and ensuring that young people are active participants in shaping outdoor policies in New Mexico and beyond.
