Investigating the Outdoors Update

04/12/2024

The morning's moody weather did not deter the ITO's class from their first spring hike! Hand warmers kept them motivated as they rock-crawled up the granite faces and our niños sure didn't shy away from a challenge. In fact, many of them sought out the craggier path to scale.

Risky play is welcomed and met with the questions like- "do you feel comfortable and confident where you are?" It's awesome to see and hear a friend chime in with "here, I can help you!". Teachers watched them learn new skills and then take their friends by the hand (or foot) to guide each other down a path, up a rock or down from a tree they may have already conquered.

At the summit, they discussed the animal of the week. The horned lizard, commonly known as the horny toad. Lots of students had seen them but were surprised to learn they live as high as 8,000+ feet in New Mexico and shoot blood from their eyes as a defense mechanism!

As they descended, niños were gifted a wildlife sighting of local deer grazing high in the hill and brilliant blue scrub jays, searching for the bugs brought out by recent precipitation. It was just another amazing day in Albuquerque!
